Top 5 Candle Mistakes That Shorten Burn Time

A candle is meant to slow things down. But if you’ve ever watched your favorite candle tunnel, burn unevenly, or disappear faster than expected, you know how frustrating it can be when that experience is cut short.
How you care for your candle matters just as much as the candle itself. Small, often overlooked habits can significantly impact how long it burns. In this blog post, we’re breaking down the top five candle mistakes that quietly shorten burn time, along with simple ways to fix them so you can linger in the lasting glow of your favorite scent.
Skipping the “first-burn” rule
The “first-burn” rule is burning your candle until the wax pool reaches the edge of the jar the first time. This helps to prevent tunneling when you burn your candle in the future, allowing for an even burn.
Consistently short burn times
Burning your candles for short periods of time (under 2-3 hours) can lead to tunneling, where the wax only melts around the wick, creating a narrow hole.
Failing to trim the wick after each burn
Before each time you light your candle, trim your wick to 1/4". This helps to prevent high flames, smoking, black soot, and “mushrooming” - where the top of the wick clumps together creating a mushroom-like effect. We recommend using wick scissors to trim your candle wicks, which comes inside of our candle care kit.
Burning in drafty areas
Placing candles near fans, open windows, or air conditioners causes uneven burning, flickering, and soot. Blowing out your candle creates smoke and can also blow hot wax onto the vessel, causing the wick to drift off-center. We suggest using a candle snuffer to extinguish your candles for the best burning experience, which is also included in our candle care kit.
Allowing candle to burn for over 4 hours
Burning for more than 4 hours causes the container to overheat, the wick to drown, and produces excess soot. We also recommend only burning a candle down to the last half-inch of wax remains to avoid the container overheating. If you’re looking to extend the life of your candle, our best-selling candle warmer lamp offers an adjustable timer (up to 8 hours) for a steady, even glow.
With just a few mindful adjustments to how you burn and care for it, you can extend its life and get the most out of every light. A longer, cleaner burn isn’t complicated. It’s simply about treating your candle with intention from the first strike to the last light.
